Cole digs 'Mole' movie

Novel spawned sequels, TV series, West End musica

Nigel Cole ("Calendar Girls") will direct "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole," based on the bestselling British young-adult book by Sue Townsend. Fortress Entertainment and Ruby Films are producing.

The novel -- which spawned a slew of sequels, two TV series and a West End musical -- concerns the trials and tribulations of a 13¾-year-old British teen searching for his identity and some degree of normalcy in his highly dysfunctional, working-class family.

Fortress' Brett Forbes and Patrick Rizzotti are producing with Ruby Films' Alison Owen.

Producer Diana Leszczynski brought the book and an adapted screenplay by Bradley Wood to Fortress.

Owen, whose recent credits include John Madden's "Proof" and Alek Keshishian's upcoming "Love and Other Disasters," has several other adaptations of Brit books in various stages of development.

Forbes and Rizzotti are producing "P.D.R." for Lionsgate, with Terrence Howard and Bernie Mac starring.
