Propmakers file new charges

Union leaders charge Cunningham with new violations

Leaders of the propmakers union, which operates as IATSE Local 44, have filed additional charges against suspended business agent Ronnie Cunningham for alleged embezzlement of union funds and other violations.

The newer charges include allegations of demanding cash payments for Local 44 employees, preferring nonmembers for jobs, using illegal surveillance devices, falsely classifying deceased members as eligible for death benefits, misconduct stemming from alcohol abuse and blacklisting members.

The local, which reps about 5,700 propmakers, set decorators and special effects technicians, said in a statement: "These are only charges, and the guilt or innocence of the matter will be born out at a future trial. This matter cannot be discussed by members of this board or the staff of Local 44."

Cunningham was ousted March 1 at an exec board meeting after proclaiming his innocence. He has not been available for comment.
