'King Kong' is the latest o'seas pic to breach China's 100 million yuan B.O. barrier.
Peter Jackson's "King Kong" has really struck a chord with Chinese auds, becoming the latest foreign movie to breach China's 100 million yuan ($12.4 million) B.O. barrier. Last weekend its total mainland take reached $12.5 million.
Since China began importing films, only four other foreign pics have passed the 100 million yuan threshold: "The Fugitive," "True Lies," "Titanic" and "Pearl Harbor."
Pic's distributor, Huaxi Film Distribution, told local media that the monkey movie, which bowed Jan. 15, had become the biggest foreign seller of the past five years.
Its release in time for the Chinese New Year holiday, which began Jan. 28, gave the ape epic a big boost.
"Titanic" holds the record with a gross of about $40 million.
A quota of 20 foreign movies are permitted to unspool in China each year.
