Frank Q. Dobbs

Writer/director/producer Frank Q. Dobbs died of cancer in Houston Feb. 15. He was 65.

A well-known figure in the Texas film biz, he started as a newspaper reporter before moving into television at Houston's NBC-affiliate KPRC, where he wrote and produced documentaries. He helped create syndicated show "The Eyes of Texas."

He wrote episodes of "Gunsmoke" and went on to write features including horror pic "Enter the Devil" and Westerns including "Smokey and the Good Time Outlaws" and "Rio Diablo."

He also shot and directed commercials, docus and features for Houston's MFC Films. Dobbs produced "Houston: The Legend of Texas" about the life of Sam Houston as well as two films developed by Larry McMurtry, "Streets of Laredo" and "Dead Man's Walk."

He is survived by a daughter.
