Sci Fi, Engler will channel broadband

Cabler to launch new net

Sci Fi Channel is gearing up to launch a broadband network and has appointed Craig Engler to oversee the operation.

Cabler named Engler senior VP of Scifi.com and Sci Fi magazine. He previously served as general manager of Scifi.com.

Elsewhere at Sci Fi, cabler has supersized the second season finale of "Battlestar Galactica" from an hour to to 90 minutes. Episode bows March 10.

Engler will work with NBC Universal's cross-platform team to develop original online content for both Scifi.com and the broadband channel. No launch date or details have yet been announced for the latter service.

Engler was instrumental in the creation of the "Battlestar Galactica" podcasts and videoblog. He also managed Sci Fi's daily news service, Sci Fi Wire. Scifi.com won a people's choice Webby award.

Engler will report to Sci Fi exec VP-general manager Dave Howe.

Prior to joining the cabler in 1999, Engler founded the Webzine Science Fiction Weekly, which later sold to Sci Fi. Before that he was the electronic publishing editor for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Spectrum, the official magazine for IEEE.
