Darren Aronofsky, helmer of indie pics "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream," has inked a first-look production deal with Universal for his Protozoa Pictures shingle.

Through their U pact, Aronofsky and producing partner Eric Watson will also develop projects for specialty arm Focus Features and its genre division Rogue Pictures.

Aronofsky is in post-production on his first film for a studio, "The Fountain," a sci-fier co-financed by Warner Bros. and New Regency that stars Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Ellen Burstyn.

Among the projects Protozoa is developing are "Flicker," an adaptation of Theodore Rozak's horror novel, for 20th Century Fox; "Song of Kali," based on a Dan Simmons novel, at Warners; and "Black Flies," about a young man who signs up to become a Gotham paramedic, at Paramount.
