'Brokeback' tries street campaign

Focus sez fliers targeted SAG members, not Oscars

'Brokeback Mountain'

A poster touting 'Brokeback Mountain' near SAG headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard is part of a Focus Features kudo campaign.

What do Oscar campaigns and student council elections have in common? Apparently, fliers taped to light posts.

Over the weekend, a full-color poster touting the cast of "Brokeback Mountain" appeared in a place where it's more common to see fliers seeking extras or lost pets.

This particular poster went up near the Screen Actors Guild headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard, in front of a coffee shop that also happens to be popular with Daily Variety staffers.

Since it touts the four SAG Award noms received -- for Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams as well as the ensemble award -- it looks like it may be old. (SAG snubbed "Brokeback" in all four categories, one of the few bumps pic has faced in its march towards the Oscars, where it has a leading eight noms, including best picture.)

Though Focus Features is pulling out all the stops where "Brokeback's" kudos contention is of concern, a rep said lampposts aren't a part of its plan.

"These are fliers that were distributed in mid-January to strategic locations that targeted SAG members -- bulletin boards at acting schools, theaters, casting agencies, etc. I'm surprised that they're still around and that some rabid fans are repurposing them guerilla-style, which is even more impressive!"
