Paramount's specialty division has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," featuring former vice president Al Gore.
The Participant Prods. docu weaves the science of global warming with Gore's personal history and longtime commitment to communicating the need to reverse the effects of climate change.
To coincide with the release of the film, Rodale Books will publish tome "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore's follow-up to "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit." Rollout is planned for May 26.
"I decided to take part in this documentary because the filmmakers convinced me that it was the best way to get the word out to as large an audience as possible, and to convince more people to look at the truth of our circumstances," Gore said in a statement. "We are recklessly, mindlessly destroying the Earth."
Davis Guggenheim helmed the pic. Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and Scott Z. Burns produced. Executive producers were Participant's Jeff Skoll along with Guggenheim. Lesley Chilcott served as co-producer.
Pic also drew strong interest from Warner Independent Pictures and marks the first film picked up by the division since John Lesher took over.
"This movie is a visually mesmerizing and shocking look at the serious and dire state of our planet," Lesher said.
