Gael Garcia Bernal is attached to star in Brazilian helmer Hector Babenco's next film, "O Pasado" (The Past).

Project is based on the novel by Argentine scribe Alan Pauls. "The Past" centers on a couple who decide to split up after 12 years. While the man, played by Garcia Bernal, moves on, his ex-partner hounds him and the other women in his life.

Babenco is in Argentina prepping the pic, which will shoot in Buenos Aires in early July.

Oscar Kramer of Argentina's KNS Films and Babenco's HB Filmes will co-produce the film, budgeted at nearly $5 million.

Garcia Bernal recently starred in Michel Gondry's sci-fi comedy "The Science of Sleep," which was picked up by Warner Independent Pictures at Sundance.

He next appears in Paramount's "Babel," in which he reteams with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, his "Amores Perros" helmer.
