Blockbuster axing staff

200 positions to be eliminated in next two weeks

Blockbuster plans to eliminate a total of 300 positions from its corporate staff of more than 1,200, spokeswoman Karen Raskopf  said.

Of the 300 positions, 200 are currently filled positions to be eliminated within the next two weeks, and 100 are vacant positions that will not be filled.

Layoffs are part of a planned overhead reduction designed to keep the company competitive, as announced in Blockbuster's Nov. 8 third quarter conference call.

Blockbuster said at that time that it is considering selling some of the chains it owns, including the 40-store Texas-based Movie Trading Co. and about 70 rental stores under other names, along with its game stores.
