'Nativity' scene's set

Hardwicke to helm story of Virgin Mary

New Line has tapped Catherine Hardwicke to direct "Nativity," a feature version of the story of the Virgin Mary.

Hardwicke's in final negotiations with the studio. "Nativity" is being fast-tracked in hopes of releasing the pic during this year's holiday season.

New Line recently bought Mike Rich's "Nativity" spec script in a preemptive purchase (Daily Variety, Jan. 25) but hasn't yet assigned producers. Studio prexy Toby Emmerich, Cale Boyter and Michael Disco oversee the project.

Hardwicke's credits include "The Lords of Dogtown" and "Thirteen." She's also developing and is attached to direct for Columbia "The Monkey Wrench Gang," based on Edward Abbey's anti-establishment novel.

Rich's script covers the two-year period in Mary and Joseph's life culminating in their departure from Nazareth and 100-mile journey to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus.

Development of "Nativity" comes two years after the release of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," which grossed more than $600 million worldwide.
