The Los Angeles Philharmonic will reprise its multimedia "Tristan Project" in April 2007 before it heads to New York for a Lincoln Center presentation.
The L.A. Phil unveiled its 2006-07 season Tuesday at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with "Tristan" principals Esa-Pekka Salonen, director Peter Sellars and video artist Bill Viola sharing the podium with Deborah Borda, prexy-CEO of the L.A. Philharmonic Assn.
The L.A. Phil will perform its version of Wagner's opera "Tristan and Isolde" in its entirety on April 18, 2007. Salonen has also programmed three concerts pairing a different act of the opera with a complementary work from Debussy. Act 1 is paired with "Printemps" on April 12; Act 2 partners with "Nocturnes" on April 13; and Act 3 is mated with "La Damoisele elue" on April 14. The pairings will be repeated in New York at the 7th Regiment Park Avenue Armory on April 30, May 1 and 2, 2007; the entire opera will be staged April 27 and May 5, 2007.
The Philharmonic's season will also include the U.S. premiere of Kaija Saariaho's oratorio "La Passion de Simone" with soprano Dawn Upshaw Jan. 12-14. Other U.S. premieres at the Disney Concert Hall are Brett Dean's Violin Concerto (Oct. 12, 14, 16); Gerald Barry's "The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit" (Nov. 28); and Salonen's "Helix" (March 30-April 1, 2007).
Season will close in May and June 2007 with five "Shadow of Stalin" programs that explore the effects of government decisions on creativity and resulting aesthetic choices.
Artists participating in On Locations Residencies are composer-pianist Thomas Ades, pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Joshua Bell and Upshaw. Each artist will appear in three to five concerts.
Jazz programs include a Horace Silver Tribute on Jan. 17, McCoy Tyner Quartet (May 4, 2007) and Charles Mingus' Epitaph Orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller (May 16, 2007). World music is represented by Brazilian guitarist Guinga performing with the L.A. Phil on Dec. 1, guitarist Paco de Lucia on Feb. 4 and Mali's Salif Keita on April 28, 2007. More shows will be announced later.
Keb Mo (Nov. 4) and Burt Bacharach (Feb. 25, 2007) are booked for the Songbook Series.
