The studio has snapped up the Untitled Air Guitar project from writing team Ian Roberts and Jay Martel, with Steve Brill aboard to direct. Barry Josephson and his Josephson Entertainment are producing.
Broad comedy is expected to be a mix of several air guitar-themed works, including a docu about the cult-like world of air guitar competitions and an upcoming memoir by Dan Crane about his time onstage as a fictitious air guitar rocker. That book is due this year from Riverhead Press, while the docu is scheduled to unspool at the upcoming South by Southwest Festival.
Project drew strong interest from DreamWorks and New Line until the former took it off the market. Studio exec John Fox brought it in.
Josephson is producing along with Anna Barber, who shepherded the rights package and produced the documentary. Josephson VP Danica Radovanov also is expected to receive some producing credit.
Writing team Roberts and Martel are already in business with DreamWorks after having penned the script "CEO," which DreamWorks is developing for Adam McKay to helm. Brill's most recent directing credit is the Paramount comedy "Without a Paddle."
