Par, Eye share 'Trek' rights
In the case of Paramount and CBS' split, there was one golden child that has been a cash cow for both parents over the past 40 years: "Star Trek."
Issue of custody came up recently when CBS made a vidgame publishing deal with Bethesda Softworks.
Does that mean CBS now owns "Star Trek?"
Sort of. As it turns out, CBS got television, publishing, Internet and licensing rights, as well as the TV library for all five series.
Paramount gets the 10-pic library, as well as the right to produce future films. Licensing revenue related to movies is split between the two companies.
Plans for an 11th movie haven't gained traction yet. Longtime "Star Trek" series producer Rick Berman, Jordan Kerner and Kerry McCluggage had been working on a prequel, but the project's still in drydock.
