Par 'Wild' about Penn

Paramount's specialty division has signed Sean Penn to direct Alaska adventure "Into the Wild," with Emile Hirsch ("The Lords of Dogtown") to star.

Project is based on Penn's adaptation of Jon Krakauer's bestseller. Producing are Art Linson and Bill Pohlad, an exec producer on "Brokeback Mountain." Pohlad will co-finance the project.

Hirsch will portray Christopher McCandless, who graduated from college in 1992, abandoned his possessions and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness and return to nature. He died four months later in an abandoned bus at a remote campsite.

Specialty division president John Lesher will oversee "Into the Wild."

Feature directing gig is the first for Penn since 2001's "The Pledge." He last appeared in "The Interpreter" and stars next in Sony's "All the King's Men."

Hirsch will be seen next in New Line's "Alpha Dog."

Linson produced Penn's breakout film, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," and worked with Hirsch as an exec producer on "Lords of Dogtown." He will be portrayed by Robert De Niro in "What Just Happened?," a film Barry Levinson will direct based on Linson's memoir about his experiences as a Hollywood producer.
