Nod was presented Wednesday night by James Woods in ceremonies at the Hollywood Roosevelt.
"Enron," which has been nommed for an Oscar, topped "Cowboy del Amor," "The Fall of Fujimori," "March of the Penguins" and "Street Fight."
WGA West president Patric M. Verrone said of Gibney, "In a banner year for documentaries that included parading penguins, cowboy cupids, Peruvian politicos and a mayoral melee, Alex's film on the Enron accounting scandal stood out as a stinging indictment of greed in American society. His work is as compelling as it is topical."
Gibney wrote, directed, and produced "Enron." He's producing "Possibilities," a film about Herbie Hancock, and "The Ten Commandments," a series of 10 60-minute films with exec producer Stephen Soderbergh. In 2004, Gibney produced the blues concert film "Lightning in a Bottle," which was released by Sony Classics; in 2003, he served as series producer for "The Blues," an Emmy-nominated series of seven films in association with exec producer Martin Scorsese.
"Enron," produced by Magnolia and HDNet Films, has topped $4 million domestically.
The WGA created the award last year to boost the profile of docu writers and to help organize the sector, most of which is not under guild jurisdiction. The union noted last month that there has been a 45% hike in U.S. docus containing a writing credit.
