News guy leaves Eye for CNN post

CBS correspondent Roberts lured to cabler

John Roberts, once considered the most likely heir to Dan Rather and one of the network's most recognizable correspondents, is jumping from CBS to CNN.

Roberts had the inside track to replace the outgoing Rather as anchor of "CBS Evening News," but his career prospects dimmed when newly appointed news prexy Sean McManus said he wasn't considering anyone inside the net for the role.

Instead, McManus has made the pursuit of NBC's "Today" co-host Katie Couric a priority -- a move endorsed by interim "Evening News" anchor and unofficial elder statesman Bob Schieffer.

Roberts has spent the past six years as CBS News' chief White House correspondent; he has anchored the Sunday edition of "Evening News" since March 1995 and was a substitute anchor for "Face the Nation."

At CNN he becomes senior national correspondent, based in Washington, D.C., and will contribute to programs throughout the network.

"My job is to do whatever they ask in whatever part of the world they want me to do it in," he said.

Roberts was one of the Eye's highest-profile anchors. He anchored the "Evening News" from New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and has also covered the war in Iraq.

Roberts is the highest-level network anchor to make the jump to cable in several years. Former ABC correspondent Aaron Brown jumped to CNN in 2001 and was made the face of the net but was jettisoned last year in favor of Anderson Cooper.
