Biz cools; 'Game' 383g

Broadway grosses

NEW YORK -- Winter in Gotham has been unusually warm, but that hasn't stopped Broadway's box office from suffering its usual seasonal slide.

Rialto grosses for Week 34 (Jan. 16-22) totaled $14,167,168, down about $1.5 million from the previous week, although still a healthy $2 million above the take from the same sesh last year.

Nearly all of the 25 shows on the boards saw a drop in biz, from a few thousand bucks to a hefty $347,764.

That latter sum came off "The Odd Couple" ($519,342), temporarily hobbled by the cancellation of three weekday perfs due to the laryngitis of star Nathan Lane. (Brad Garrett filled in for Lane over the weekend.)

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" took a major tumble of $320,844 in replacement star Jonathan Pryce's first week, while "The Lion King," "The Producers," "Sweeney Todd," "The Woman in White," "Hairspray" and "Chicago" all dipped by more than $100,000.

Bucking the trend, "The Phantom of the Opera," perhaps still riding the publicity wave from its record-breaking perf Jan. 9, actually climbed by about $15,000. "Jersey Boys" also held steady, rising $9,000.

"Bridge & Tunnel" gained a bit of momentum as it moved into its opening week, playing to a nearly 94% capacity crowd. The first six previews of "The Pajama Game" also played to about that capacity.

The 20 musicals grossed $12,557,958 for 88.6% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 165,291 for 78.4% capacity.

The five plays grossed $1,609,210 for 11.4% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 25,018 at 68.8% capacity.

Average paid admission was $75.97 for musicals, $64.32 for plays and $74.44 for all shows.
