Abi Morgan will pen the remake. Paula Weinstein will produce.
Based on a 1938 British play by Patrick Hamilton and preceded by a 1940 British film, the MGM classic starred Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman and garnered seven Oscar nominations, including a win for Bergman. It also introduced the film's title into the vernacular, as the act of "gaslighting" someone means to drive them insane.
Pic revolves around a woman whose suitor has designs on her money, and after luring her to a house of horrors, he methodically tries to convince her she is insane.
Weinstein, who just left for South Africa to produce the Ed Zwick-directed "Blood Diamond" with Leonardo DiCaprio, said both Wright and Morgan were eager to transplant the drama from their native Great Britain.
"(Joe) wanted to explore what goes on here (in America) with the money and the drive for it," Weinstein said. "Abi is a great writer of character, and we wanted someone who'd bring a fresh take to the California setting. They will go back to the original play as a source as well."
Morgan, who wrote the BBC miniseries "Sex Traffic," just completed writing a BBC miniseries on 2004's devastating tsunami.
WB exec veep Kevin McCormick will shepherd the drama.
