Work on the show ended Friday following the taping of the sixth episode and a decision by ABC brass to reduce its original order. Just a day before, Alphabet had said it was pre-empting what would have been the show's second telecast (Daily Variety, Jan 13).
Despite a huge promo push by ABC, "Emily's" -- from Pariah and Sony Pictures Television -- opened to disappointing ratings. Its Jan. 9 premiere averaged a 2.8/7 in adults 18-49, ranking fourth in its 9 p.m. slot and losing a huge chunk of its "Wife Swap" lead-in.
As of Monday, "Emily's" was still scheduled to return to ABC's sked next week. Once Alphabet execs see how last night's "Bachelor" repeat does in the 9 p.m. timeslot, however, net may decide to pull the show for good.
Reps for Sony and ABC couldn't be reached for comment on the holiday. Exec producer Gavin Polone acknowledged the shutdown, however, and said he understood the thinking behind ABC's decision.
"It is a shame," he said. "A lot of people were working really hard and the show kept improving. Sony spent a huge amount of money and were very supportive. I can't fault ABC, though: they promoted it like crazy and when the audience stays away, in this super-competitive environment, quick decisions are made. That's the television business."
