'Naples' preems overseas in…Naples
Turturro starrer heads from New York to Italy
After playing Off Broadway at the Duke last year, the Theater for a New Audience production of Eduardo de Filippo's tragicomedy in an English-language translation starring John Turturro will have its overseas preem at the Mercadante Teatro Stabile playhouse in Naples.
Limited Jan. 24-29 engagement marks a unique case of an Italian classic being performed in English -- with Italian electronic subtitles -- for an Italo audience.
Titled "Questi Fantasmi!" in the original, Neapolitan native de Filippo's play is set in 1946 Naples, where down-on-his luck protag Pasquale and his young wife move into a crumbling, haunted palazzo.
Roman Paska-directed adaptation has a mostly Italian-American cast, including Max Casella and Aida Turturro.
John Turturro was last in Italy at the 2005 Venice Film Festival to tubthump his movie musical "Romance and Cigarettes." During Venice, arrangements were made for "Souls" to travel to Naples as part of the Napoli Scena Internazionale legit fest, partly funded by the Italian government.
