Eking out a win after a weekend in which the bowing "King Kong" thoroughly defeated it, Disney and Walden's "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" grossed $5 million Wednesday. That was barely ahead of $4.9 million for U's "Kong."
With kids out of school, "Narnia" is getting a second wind that should make for a very competitive Christmas weekend between the two tentpoles.
Of Wednesday's two debuts, "Fun With Dick and Jane" was the clear victor. Jim Carrey starrer grossed a decent $3.8 million at 3,056 theaters.
While Sony was hoping to be competitive for the top spot with the big-budget comedy, it was a surprisingly solid win over "Cheaper by the Dozen 2." With many kids able to go to matinees, Fox family comedy seemed poised to beat "Dick and Jane" on their opening day, but "Cheaper" ended up grossing just $2.5 million on 3,175 playdates.
