Delluc likes 'Lovers'

Garrel starrer won a Silver Lion at Venice

France's award season started Friday with Philippe Garrel's "Regular Lovers" taking the 63rd Prix Louis Delluc for film.

Jury prexy Gilles Jacob announced the prize at upscale showbiz eatery Fouquet's.

Three-hour film, which won a Silver Lion for directing and a tech prize for photography at the Venice Film Festival, stars the director's son, Louis Garrel ("The Dreamers"), as a youth grappling with love, sex and politics in the 1960s. The director's father, vet thesp Maurice Garrel, had a major role as the cancer-stricken dad in last year's Delluc winner, Arnaud Desplechin's "Kings and Queen."

The prize for first film went to Anthony Cordier's "Cold Showers." Pic about teens in a ménage a trois preemed in Directors Fortnight at Cannes.

The Delluc, named for one of Gaul's pioneering silent era crix-turned-helmers, kicks off Gaul's film awards season and is often a strong indicator of kudos to come.

In addition to Jacob, the 14 jurors serve for life, making a Delluc judging slot nearly as coveted as the prize itself.
