MK in China hardtop

World Brief

South Korean distrib-production company MK Pictures has pacted with China's Eastern Dragon Film and privately run distributor Beijing Poly Bona Film to jointly operate multiplexes in China.

The three plan to establish a joint stock company to oversee their exhibition interests.

MK is the latest Korean company to try its hand at penetrating the hardtop market in China. Others include leading exhibitor CJ CGV and rival firm Megabox Cineplex.

Poly Bona will also distribute MK's films in China, and the three will cooperate in production, distribution, talent management and advertising.

Eastern Dragon is a subsidiary of Poly Culture and Arts Co., part of the Poly Group, which is linked to the People's Liberation Army.

MK Pictures was established in 2004 with the merger Myung Films and KangJeGyu Films. In November the company launched a distribution arm and released romantic comedy "When Romance Meets Destiny."
