B'way Grosses

Holiday shoppers are spending on Broadway, too. Total grosses for Week 28 (Dec. 5-11) rose $976,231 to $19,029,206, a particularly jolly tally for a traditionally robust season.

Majority of the 30 shows on the boards saw increases, especially "The Color Purple" ($869,119), up $291,850 in the wake of Oprah Winfrey's opening-night publicity push, and "Movin' Out" ($756,326), vaulting up $180,944 in its final week on Broadway.

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" jumped $114,413 to post a strong showing at $976,779, while "The Lion King" ($1,219,268) and "The Producers" ($901,043) each rose by a high-five-figure margin. "Jersey Boys" ($817,500) continued its winning streak, breaking the house record at the August Wilson again.

The sesh's two openings, "A Touch of the Poet" ($296,123) and "Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life" ($274,299), both saw mild drops due to the week's heavily comped press performances.

And finally, "In My Life" ($163,000) gave up its valiant fight to become the people's choice. Like "Movin' Out," it played its last and moved out Dec. 11.

The 24 musicals grossed $17,074,103 for 89.7% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 221,918 at 84.3% of capacity.

The six plays grossed $1,955,103 for 10.3% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 28,149 at 69.9% of capacity.

Average paid admission was $76.94 for musicals, $69.46 for plays and $76.10 for all shows.
