The $15 million KT Kwak-helmed nautical actioner sold 280,000 tix and made $1.7 million on opening day, Thursday, the highest this year, beating CJ's previous best, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," which sold 250,000 tix in August.
"Typhoon" was financed and released by conglom CJ Entertainment on a record 530 screens.
UIP's "King Kong" was released on 420 screens Thursday, but the big ape's B.O. numbers have yet to be announced locally.
