HBO courting Section Eight

Clooney, Soderbergh score basketball series

George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh are hooping it up with HBO.

Pair's Section Eight shingle has partnered with NBA Entertainment and Maloof Television on an unscripted comedy series set in the world of basketball.

HBO is closing in on a deal to develop the project, which would tell the story of a fictional NBA expansion team through the eyes of a coach, a cheerleader, a seasoned player and a rookie. Episodes would follow the group as they struggle with their place in the league.

Like past Section Eight-HBO collaborations "Unscripted" and "K Street," series would combine fictional and real-life elements. Producers will have unprecedented access to the NBA during production.

Former Lakers center Vlade Divac is said to be in talks to play the veteran, while former Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson is said to be up for the coach.

On the TV side, Section Eight is readying FX event series "The Ten Commandments," a project exploring the spiritual and moral issues faced by modern America as told by 10 different directors.

Maloof TV recently produced the "Project Greenlight" horror feature "Feast." They've also set up the reality series "Bull Run" at Spike TV.
