'Devil' of a debut for Teuton outfit

Pic stars Jackson, German thesp Schwarz

Germany's Screencraft Entertainment is partnering with Canada's Gynormous Pictures on mystery thriller "Meet the Devil," helmed by Josef Rusnak ("The Thirteenth Floor"). Arclight Films will handle international distribution.

Pic is Munich-based Screencraft's debut as a producer. Company has acted as an agent between U.S. producers and German financiers on projects including Jeff Renfroe and Marteinn Thorsson's sci-fi thriller "One Point 0" and Zola Maseko's South African drama "Drum."

Budgeted at $7 million, "Meet the Devil" stars Joshua Jackson and German thesp Jessica Schwarz ("The Red Cockatoo") in a story Screencraft describes as along the lines of Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo."

Wedigo von Schultzendorff, who shot Rusnak's "The Thirteenth Floor," will be cinematographer.

German regional subsidy board Filmstiftung NRW is supporting the project with e500,000 ($590,000).

Org also slated $1.4 million for "Within the Whirlwind" by Dutch helmer Marleen Gorris, ("Antonia's Line," "Mrs. Dalloway").

A German-French co-production, "Within the Whirlwind" is the true story of a woman in a Soviet gulag during the reign of Joseph Stalin. Pic stars Diane Kruger, Martina Gedeck and Ulrich Tukur.

Filmstiftung NRW granted $7.7 million to 23 projects in its latest session. The largest single sum ever awarded by the body, $2.9 million, went to three-part TV history drama "Henri Quatre," an adaptation of Heinrich Mann's novel, produced by Berlin-based Ziegler Film and France's GTV.
