'Impossible' accomplished in China

Cast and crew were in country for around two weeks

Tom Cruise starrer "Mission: Impossible 3" wrapped in Shanghai this week, two days ahead of schedule.

"I have to say we were warned before we came here that working with the local crew, because of the language barrier and everything, might slow things down. It was faster," director J.J. Abrams said Wednesday at a press conference here.

Cruise added: "We finished ahead of schedule here because of how well our company and the company that we had here worked together. It enabled us to be able to work at a terrific speed, without compromising the film in any way."

Cast and crew, joined by a large local contingent for this leg of the shoot, were in China for around two weeks. They shot in Shanghai and in the picturesque local canal town of Xitang. Earlier sections of the shoot took place in Germany, Italy and the U.S.

Shanghai's Jinmao Tower, China's tallest building, and the city's distinctive TV tower will feature in the film, according to Cruise, who described the city as spectacular.

"We were looking at the world and saying, 'Where should we go, what hasn't been explored really in Western film yet the way it should be?'" said Abrams. "Shanghai is a city with such scale and majesty, and it's really unfamiliar to so many people."

Cruise said the trailer for the film was already cut and would play in front of "King Kong" on its release in mid-December.

Paramount reportedly wants approval from Chinese authorities for a day-and-date release for "M:I3" in May to limit piracy (Daily Variety, Nov. 17).
