A sheltered 'Youth'

Dimension buys comedy from Shangri-La

Dimension Films has acquired from Steve Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment the cutting-edge teen comedy "Youth in Revolt."

Deal comes with rights to the C.D. Payne novel as well as a script by Gustin Nash. Dimension topper Bob Weinstein plans to put the film into production next year.

Novel, a cult favorite, is the coming-of-age tale of a 16-year-old who keeps a journal of his dogged quest to lose his virginity.

Pic is described as a cross between "American Pie" and "Portnoy's Complaint," and is expected to carry an R rating for its depiction of sexual humor. Originally self-published, Payne's novel has been published in other countries, has been staged as a play and a radio broadcast and has several Web sites devoted to it.

David Permut, who originally set up the book and set Nash to adapt it, is producing. He first berthed the book with Artisan production president Richard Saperstein, who moved on to head production at Dimension and reeled in the project after Bing agreed to sell it. Shangri-La will be involved in a peripheral producing capacity. Permut Presentations veep Steve Longi is co-producing with Miranda Freiberg.

"Gustin Nash wrote a phenomenal script with all of the necessary elements to make a commercial hit," Weinstein said.

Dimension continues to broaden away from the genre product for which it is best known. "Youth in Revolt" follows deals for the Steve Conrad-directed "Quebec," as well as the Todd Phillips-directed comedy "School for Scoundrels."
