That duo is circling "Reign O'er Me," a Binder-scripted drama that Sony Pictures Entertainment is angling to acquire and make next year with a budget under $20 million.
Sandler would play a man who lost his family on Sept. 11 and has never recovered from his grief. He runs into his former college roommate (Cheadle), who has become a doctor and who is determined to help his ex-roomie come to grips with his loss.
Michael Rotenberg and Jack Binder will produce.
Though the deals have to be set, "Reign O'er Me" is poised to be the third significant studio project to take on 9/11.
Oliver Stone has already begun production for Paramount on an untitled drama that covers the attempt to rescue two Port Authority cops trapped in the World Trade Center rubble, with Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena playing the victims.
"Bourne Supremacy" director Paul Greengrass is busy at Universal making "Flight 93," a partly improvised film about what might have happened when passengers on the hijacked flight overpowered the terrorists, who crashed the plane in a vacant field, killing all aboard.
Cheadle is coming off performances in "Hotel Rwanda" and "Crash," and for Sandler the film would continue the drama track he has followed with "Punch Drunk Love" and "Spanglish." Sandler just completed the Columbia comedy "Click," directed by Frank Coraci ("The Wedding Singer")
Binder recently wrapped writing and directing "Man About Town," a pic for Media 8 Films production that stars Ben Affleck.
