Rival Chinese-language film events unspooled this weekend with Hong Kong action-comedy "Kung Fu Hustle" winning five honors at Sunday's 42nd Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan while Hong Kong's Jackie Chan won for actor at the mainland's 25th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival on Saturday.

"Kung Fu Hustle" took picture, director (Stephen Chow), supporting actress (Yuen Qiu), visual effects & makeup and costume design, beating odds-on favorite "Election," which had led with 11 noms.

Unlike past years in which obscure arthouse darlings beat blockbusters, this year's winners' list favored B.O. heavyweights.

Canto-pop crooner Aaron Kwok beat favorites Chang Chen and Tony Leung Ka-fai in the actor category, while Shu Qi won actress for director Hou Hsiao-hsien's romantic triptych "Three Times."

Anthony Wong won supporting actor for his alcoholic race car driver in "Initial D."

Jay Chou -- the Chinese-speaking world's king of pop -- bagged new performer for breakthrough perf in "Initial D."

Held in Keelung, Taiwan, the Golden Horse awards are seen as the Oscar equivalent for the Chinese film industry because they include all Chinese-language movies.

In recent years, it has faced competition from the mainland's Golden Rooster awards, this year held on the island of Hainan, southern China, which opened up its categories to include industryites from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan for the first time.

Chan became the first nonmainland thesp to win the Golden Rooster for actor for "New Police Story."

Director Ma Liwen won the Golden Rooster for "You and Me," for which Jim Yaqin won actress honors.

Xie Tieli and Xie Jin, two of the leading lights of the so-called Third Generation of Chinese directors, were given lifetime achievement awards.

For the first time, the fest carried a section for foreign movies, and pics from the U.S., Russia and South Korea were given gongs. Twenty films from 16 countries took part in the three-day foreign section.

To mark the 100th anniversary of Chinese cinema, rising starlet Zhang Ziyi ("Memoirs of a Geisha") was elected one of the 100 most outstanding Chinese film actors.
