AFI Fest warms to 'Winter'

'C.R.A.Z.Y.' tied with 'Tsotsi' for the audience nod for feature.

Norway's "Kissed by Winter" received the grand jury prize for international feature Sunday at AFI Fest.

American pic "The Refugee All Stars" received the Aquafina Pure Vision international docu grand prize, which came with a $10,000 unrestricted grant for filmmakers Zach Niles and Banker White. The shorts jury prize went to Germany's "Delivery," which also received the audience award for short.

Canada's "C.R.A.Z.Y." and South Africa/the U.K.'s "Tsotsi" tied for the audience nod for feature.

"Through the Fire" earned the Netflix audience award for documentary, which also included a $5,000 unrestricted grant for directors Jonathan Hock and Alistair Christopher.

Fest kicked off with Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line," directed by James Mangold and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Other events included centerpiece gala screenings of "The World's Fastest Indian" and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada," and the closing night gala, with "Casanova," directed by Lasse Hallstrom, making its North American premiere following the awards ceremony.

AFI Fest spanned 10 days and showcased 127 films from 44 countries, including 20 world preems, 21 North American premieres and 18 U.S. premieres.
