Darren Grant, who made his helming debut on this year's surprise hit "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," has set up his next assignment, pacting to direct Fox 2000's comic adaptation "Venus Kincaid."
Underground Films' Nick Osborne and Trevor Engelson are producing; Scott Cherrin exec produces.
"Kincaid" was created by online animation team the Love brothers under their Gettosake Entertainment banner. Story follows a female African-American government agent who finds herself shrunken down to a teenaged girl but retaining all of her special sleuthing skills.
The combination of the family appeal with action elements is what Grant says attracted him to the project.
"I liked the crossover potential, and that this had a bit of edge and action to it," he said, "which was a departure to what I'd done before."
Before "Diary" Grant had directed more than 130 musicvideos with the likes of Jay Z, Destiny's Child, Mya, TI, Wyclef Jean, Busta Rhymes, Jewel, Missy Elliot and Aaliyah.
"I wanted to go back to those (video) roots, to use some cool cinematic techniques and do visually dynamic stuff," Grant said.
Lori Lakin is penning the adaptation of "Kincaid."
Underground, which with Team Todd recently wrapped on "Zoom's Academy" for Revolution, is also producing horror title "Black Autumn" with Phoenix Pictures for Fox 2000.
