WHO: Gore Vidal, Charlie Kaufman, Evan Wright, Ursula K. Le Guin and Meredith May were among the recipients at the non-profit free-speech org's gala.
LOT IN LIFE: "In every generation, there are these souls who are condemned almost at birth to be a writer for life," Lifetime Achievement Award winner Vidal said.
ODD MAN OUT: Kaufman, who received best screenplay nod, was surprised to be at the podium because he wrote "this stupid little screenplay and there's really nothing I'm protesting against except maybe not to erase people from your mind," he said of his "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
