Man on a 'Mission'

Helmer Berg takes on Hong Kong redo

Universal Pictures is acquiring rights to the Hong Kong action film "Cheung Fo" and will turn it into a Peter Berg-directed drama called "The Mission."

Dario Scardapane ("Fantastic Voyage") is writing the script.

Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Doug Davison will produce with Berg and his Film 44 partners John Cameron and Sarah Aubrey. Universal has a first-look deal with both companies. Vertigo got the rights to the Hong Kong pic.

Set in San Francisco and Las Vegas, "The Mission" will center on a group of criminals who bond as bodyguards for an aging crime boss. Their brotherhood is tested when one of them breaks ranks.

Pic marks the first major project set up by recently named Universal production president Jon Gordon, who'll shepherd it along with senior veep Dylan Clark.

Scardapane, with Joe Carnahan, also has made a deal with the Fox network on "Faceless," an L.A. crime drama pilot that Scardapane will write and Carnahan will direct; Management 360 and Flame TV are producing.

Berg will supervise development on "Mission" as he preps several projects that include the Michael Mann-produced "The Kingdom."
