Pic, which begins shooting in February, will mark the feature directing debut of Michael Cahill, best known for his Faulkner Prize-winning novel "A Nixon Man."
Comedy concerns a young girl whose teenage years are complicated by an eccentric and manic-depressive father who becomes obsessed with his belief that there's buried treasure in the San Fernando Valley.
"King" is being financed by Lone Star Film Group, Emmett/Furla Films and Millennium Films. Payne and London are producing with Randall Emmett and Fred Westheimer, the latter of whom makes his producing debut after leaving WMA to launch Lone Star.
Avi Lerner, Michael McDonnell, George Furla, Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson will exec produce. William Morris Independent is selling North American rights.
Cahill was Payne's classmate at UCLA Film School. Cahill won the Morrison/Jacobson Award for his short film "The Knife," and his short follow-up, "A Broken Horse," is still playing festivals in the U.S. and Europe.
"Alexander and I have been trying to put this film together for about four years," London said. "When Michael got involved, we were able to get the financing together. Michael shadowed Alexander on the 'Sideways' set, and Alexander will be very involved in supporting him during the production."
Douglas is shooting "You, Me and Dupree" for Universal. He recently completed the Fox and New Regency drama "The Sentinel," a pic he's producing through his Furthur Films banner. Douglas stars in the film with Kiefer Sutherland, Eva Longoria and Kim Basinger. Clark Johnson-directed pic will be released next spring.
