'Evil' knocking

Screen Gems grabs 3rd in horror series

Sony's Screen Gems is looking for more monster mayhem, sealing a deal to distribute Constantin Films' third installment in the "Resident Evil" franchise in North America and other key territories.

Paul W.S. Anderson, who penned the first two pics, is returning to write "Resident Evil: Afterlife." Davis Film is producing with Germany's Constantin, while Summit Entertainment is repping the pic at the AFM. Casting has not been announced. Milla Jovovich toplined "Resident Evil" and "Resident Evil: Apocalypse."

"Afterlife" -- based on the videogame by Capcom -- continues Alice's battle with the diabolical Umbrella Corp. as she races to expose a virus that is threatening mankind with extinction before a new race of clones called the Undead finishes the job.

Producers are Anderson, his longtime producing partner Jeremy Bolt, and Robert Kulzer. Bernd Eichinger and Davis Films' Samuel Hadida are exec producing.

"This series has become an important franchise for Screen Gems and we are confident that the film will prove to be as successful over all the distribution channels as its two previous episodes have done," Screen Gems prexy Clint Culpepper said.

In addition to North America, Screen Gems will distrib "Afterlife" in Latin America, the U.K., Japan, Australia/New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Portugal, South Africa, India and Pakistan. Constantin will distrib in Germany, while Metropolitan FilmExport has picked up rights in France.
