Book is about an unusual romantic triangle among an anthropologist, his particle physicist girlfriend and Lack, a black hole in the universe that's the result of an experiment and with which the particle physicist has become obsessed.
Sale was arranged after Lethem won the MacArthur Genius Award. Producers Parkes and MacDonald were intrigued by the love story and are looking for a writer who'll struggle with its complexities.
"When you are attempting a romantic comedy that takes place in the context of theoretical physics, it is not a premise you come across every day," Parkes said. "It's a fascinating book, but it will be a challenging adaptation. Though the source material includes issues like the string theory of physics, you see this tiny spark for a project that can work."
Parkes and MacDonald produced the upcoming "Legend of Zorro." They are exec producing the Marc Forster-directed "The Kite Runner" and are producers on Scott Frank-helmed drama "The Lookout" for Disney/Spyglass.
