Project reps the second feature helming assignment for the son of the former Mouse House chief, who made his debut on last spring's "Sahara."
Ross has penned the current "Creature" draft, a present-day update of the 1954 monster classic. He has a particular interest in the project: His father, Arthur A. Ross, wrote the screenplay for the original.
"As a kid, I remember loving Jack Arnold's original version of this film," Eisner said. "What I really want to do is update an iconic image from the '50s and bring in more of the sci-fi sensibility of 'Alien' or John Carpenter's 'The Thing.' "
Original introduced Gill Man, who terrorized archaeologists exploring in the Amazon. Plans for the update call for shooting in the U.S. as well as a Central or South American location.
Before "Sahara," Eisner honed his helming skills in TV, directing a seg of "Steven Spielberg Presents Taken" and pilots for "Thought Crimes" and "The Invisible Man."
Production prexy Donna Langley and veep Jeff Kirschenbaum oversee the project for Universal.
