Arquette appeared in the feature "Pulp Fiction" and next stars in the upcoming edition of VH1's "The Surreal Life." He's the brother of thesps David, Rosanna and Patricia Arquette, who will all participate in the film along with sister-in-law Courteney Cox.
Production on the untitled doc has been under way for more than a year, filming Arquette's initial therapy sessions and his first hormone injections; project will culminate in his completed surgery. Arquette just received the go-ahead from psychiatrists to proceed with the operation.
Nikki Parrott is producing the project, a co-production with BBC 4. Spec will air under the "Biography" banner.
"The strength of A&E's programming comes from the kinds of characters we follow," said A&E senior veep of nonfiction/alternative programming Nancy Dubuc. "We look for real people facing transitional moments in their lives. In becoming a woman, Alexis is going through what I'd call the ultimate life transformation."
Spec is slated to air in the first quarter next year.
Arquette's recent film credits include "Lords of Dogtown," "Wasabi Tuna" and "Spun."
