Mandel, a graduate of AFI in 1979, has helmed "School Ties," "FX," "Big Shots" and "The Substitute." In addition to directing episodes of "The X-Files," "Lost" and "Prison Break," his TV experience includes projects with HBO, Fox, Lifetime and A&E.
Mandel has earned MFA degrees from both Columbia U. and the AFI Conservatory.
Originally a director of theatrical productions on New York stages, he has taught at the City College of New York and served as a directing mentor at the Sundance Institute.
As dean, he will oversee the AFI Conservatory's two-year MFA program, which offers degrees in six filmmaking fields.
