Sony plants pix at Asian cabler

Titles to begin airing in January

NEW YORK -- AZN, a cable channel for Asian-Americans, has inked an output agreement with Sony Pictures TV for exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the next 10 Asian feature films released Stateside by Sony Pictures Classics.

Deal also includes rights to 16 of SPC's most recent Asian films and six of Sony Home Entertainment's.

Pact was unveiled by Peilin Chou, senior VP for programming and Production at the Asian-American niche channel.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for us to work with a studio that is entrenched in Asian film," Chou said. "Through this partnership, we will be able to further fuel that interest by providing our Asian-American viewers, as well as anyone interested in quality Asian cinema, with a national showcase for Asian film for the first time on television."

Under the terms of the deal, AZN will premiere the next 10 Asian and Asian-American feature titles theatrically released by Sony Pictures Classics. AZN will have rights to each of the films for one year.

The first film to premiere on the channel will be Wong Kar Wai's "2046," starring Tony Leung and Gong Li.

Additional titles in the package are Zhang Yimou's "House of Flying Daggers," Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" and Zhang Ziyi's acting debut, "The Road Home."

The Sony titles will begin airing on AZN in January.

AZN's primetime programming targets the young, affluent, fast-growing and English-speaking Asian-American community.

AZN is a service of Intl. Networks, a company wholly owned by Comcast.
