Inside Move: Not 'Made' for primetime

USA, Comedy Central shift struggling shows

After two subpar performances, USA Network has moved just-launched reality show "Made in the USA" out of primetime, while Comedy Central has removed latenight chatfest "Too Late With Adam Carolla" from its perch behind "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart."

"Made in the USA," in which amateur inventors compete for a slot on Home Shopping Network, had been airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on USA. But after losing 28% of its audience week-to-week, cabler has slated the remaining four episodes for Thursdays at 6 p.m.

The Sept. 28 episode drew just 793,000 -- a 63% drop from its "Law & Order" lead-in. Cabler will revert to airing movies at 9 on Wednesday nights.

Skein is the second original USA has launched this year. The first was "Kojak," starring Ving Rhames in a remake of the 1973 cop show. Skein delivered decent but unspectacular numbers; a decision on a second season pickup is still pending. Ken Mok ("America's Next Top Model") exec produces "Made in the USA."

Over at Comedy Central, "Carolla" has been bumped to midnight. Talker was given the sweet 11:30 p.m. slot following "The Daily Show" but averaged less than 700,000 viewers per episode in its first few weeks.

Plan always had been for "Carolla" to relocate once "The Colbert Report" debuts. But sources say cabler execs moved "Carolla" out early to avoid the awkward situation of promoting an incoming 11:30 p.m. show while new episodes of a frosh series aired in the time period.

Reruns of "The Daily Show" will take its place until "Colbert" bows on Oct. 17.
