Fox cutting off 'Head'

Net is closing up 'Cases'

Fox has dropped the guillotine on frosh drama "Head Cases," making the quirky legal drama the first casualty of the 2005-06 season.

Production was halted and producers, including 20th Century Fox TV, were informed of Fox's decision late Thursday. Six segs (including the pilot) had been shot, leaving four unaired episodes on the shelf.

Fox had aired just two editions of "Head Cases," which starred Chris O'Donnell and Adam Goldberg as a mismatched team of attorneys. But the net opted to pull the plug after "Head Cases" barely registered on Wednesday night, averaging just a 1.2 rating and 3 share in adults 18-49 -- down from its weak launch a week earlier (2.3/6).

As for the Wednesday 9 p.m. slot, net will sub in original segs of reality skein "Nanny 911" on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5; after that, baseball coverage will fill the slot anyway.

Reality entry "Trading Spouses" will air in the time period starting Nov. 2.

Bill Chais created "Head Cases" and exec produced the show with Barry Josephson and Jeff Rake. O'Donnell starred as Jason Payne, a go-getter lawyer who snaps and winds up in an asylum. As part of his release, Jason is forced to buddy up with another slightly unbalanced lawyer, Shultz (Goldberg).

Krista Allen, Jake Cherry, Richard Kind, Rhea Seehorn and Rockmond Dunbar also starred.
