'Comeback' is not coming back to HBO

Cabler nixes 'Comeback' kid

HBO is not bringing back "The Comeback" -- the first time in recent history that the paybox has not renewed a scripted series for a second season.

Half-hour comedy from exec producers Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow centered on a former sitcom star, played by Kudrow, as she struggled to restart her acting career via a reality show.

Canceling shows after just one cycle is rare for HBO, though improvised half-hours "K Street" and "Unscripted" wound up as seasonlong events.

Despite its "Sex and the City" pedigree and star wattage from a former "Friend," "The Comeback" seemed doomed from the get-go. Premiere was greeted with numerous pans from critics and a lukewarm reception of 1.5 million viewers. Succeeding episodes often sunk to tallies below 1 million viewers and the Sept. 4 season finale drew just 920,000 viewers -- off 57% from its lead-in (the season-ender for "Entourage").

"Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow developed a uniquely original series. However, we looked at our schedule and, given our future commitments, we felt we would not be able to give the show the support it needed," said a spokeswoman for HBO.

Cabler recently committed to a second season of "Rome" and a third helping of "Entourage."
