NEW YORK -- After nearly a three-year search, the Los Angeles Times has finally appointed a theater critic.
The job last filled by Michael Phillips, now with the Chicago Tribune, soon will be held by Charles McNulty.
In the interim, the Times has used a stable of freelance writers to cover the legit beat.
Even a Times staff memo remarked on the years between full-time critics. "At long last, after an exhaustive search of theater critics across the country, we're confident we've found the best person for the job," wrote John Montorio, deputy managing editor, and Bret Israel, Sunday Calendar editor.
McNulty is currently a senior editor at the Village Voice and has written for
Variety. He's also head of the MFA program in dramaturgy and theater criticism at Brooklyn College. He'll start at the Times in December, after the current semester ends.
