Stiller and Roach, who most recently worked together on "Meet the Fockers," have been plotting this picture for several years. The sudden emergence of Carrey as Stiller's co-star has propelled the film toward the start line.
It's the first comedy project Carrey has sparked to in a while. He has been shooting "Fun With Dick and Jane" for holiday release, and turned down a "Bruce Almighty" sequel that has now been turned into a Steve Carell vehicle.
"Used Guys" is being produced by Stiller, his Red Hour partner Stuart Cornfeld and Roach, who'll produce through his Everyman Pictures banner.
Scripted by David Guion and Michael Handelman from an original script by Mickey Birnbaum, the futuristic "Used Guys" is set in a world where women run the Earth. Men became extinct because they ingested an enhancement drink that proved fatal.
Carrey and Stiller will play clones rendered obsolete by superior models whose enhancements include better listening and lovemaking skills. The scorned clones make a run for it, bent on regaining their dignity by searching for a male nirvana known as Mantopia.
"Used Guys" would mark the first onscreen star pairing of Carrey and Stiller, though the latter directed Carrey in "The Cable Guy." It will also be Carrey's first film with Roach.
Debbie Liebling will oversee the comedy for 20th Century Fox, marking the second major Red Hour project for the studio. Like "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," "Used Guys" originated at DreamWorks, where Red Hour has a first-look deal.
