Mouse updates lamp tale

Modern-day Aladdin story makes Disney wishlist

The Mouse is hoping to coax some more magic out of Aladdin's lamp.

Walt Disney Pictures has bought a pitch of a modern-day Aladdin story from scribe Bill Kelly for Adam Shankman's Offspring Entertainment.

Shankman ("The Pacifier") is tentatively slated to direct, pending completion of the script.

He will produce along with Offspring's Jennifer Gibgot. Sunil Perkash, who developed the story with Kelly, also is producing and will share story credit. Kelly is on tap to write the script.

Jason Reed is overseeing the project for the studio.

Pic will be live-action with a contemporary setting. Otherwise, the studio is keeping details under wraps.

Kelly is already writing another contemporary, fairy-tale-inspired pic for Disney: "Enchanted," a mix of live-action and animation, to be helmed by Kevin Lima ("Tarzan"). Perkash is an exec producer on the pic.

Mouse House's animated "Aladdin," with Robin Williams as the voice of the genie, became a major toon franchise.

Pic grossed $217 million domestic and $504 million worldwide, also spawning a TV series and several lucrative direct-to-video sequels.
