Mouse boycott off

Exhib to show 'Sin,' 'Herbie'

'Sin City'

German exhib Cinemaxx has rescinded its boycott of 'Sin City' as well as 'Herbie: Fully Loaded.'

BERLIN -- Cinemaxx, Germany's second-biggest exhib, lifted its boycott on "Sin City" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded" on Thursday after pacting with Buena Vista Intl. on rental rates.

Cinemaxx had nixed the pics due to their early DVD release dates. Both are due out in December, just four months after the theatrical run rather than the six months that is the norm in Germany.

Other major exhibs, including Greater Union Filmpalast, UCI and Kinopolis, continue to clash with BVI over the issue and are refusing to carry the films. Exhibs complain that pics lose appeal with cinemagoers when they can buy them off the shelf so soon after theatrical release.

"Sin City" started Thursday in Germany, while "Herbie: Fully Loaded" unspooled on some screens on Aug. 4.

Cinemaxx, which operates 36 multiplexes with 316 screens, is already screening "Sin City" in some theaters and said both pics will be included in its program as soon as the reels are delivered to theaters, or at the latest by Saturday.
